How you’ll make a difference

As an Envirocrime Enforcement Officer, you will investigate, enforce, and where necessary prepare cases for prosecution to address environment crime across South Gloucestershire.

What you will be doing

  • Daily, you will receive and respond to complaints and investigate criminal offences such as fly tipping and waste duty of care, issuing guidance and taking appropriate enforcement action.
  • It will be your responsibility to gather evidence for potential litigation, conducting interviews in accordance with the requirement of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act. You will prepare all necessary reports, case papers, witness statements, obtain warrants and telephone data records and give evidence in court. 
  • Offering expert advice, you will assist officers across the department on enforcement related cases and develop and deliver training on procedures and practices for enforcement, representing the authority at meetings as required.
  • It will be key for you to keep up to date with local environmental legislation and best practice, amending policy and procedures to reflect changes and draft policy and strategy reports relating to the delivery of enforcement activities.
  • Having regular contact with StreetCare, waste management and environmental health staff, you will set targets and initiatives in problem areas, maintain accurate records and collate report data to monitor performance.

What we need from you

  • We require you to hold a degree in a criminology or experience of working in an envirocrime or other criminal specialist field of enforcement. It is desirable that you hold or be working towards a relevant professional or technical qualification, such as the Level 3 diploma in policing (QCF) or a degree in environmental health.
  • It is essential that you can investigate, collect evidence and prepare case files to present in court, including the preparation of paperwork and attendance in court to obtain warrants for phone data records and the issue of fixed penalty notices. 
  • Given the elements of the role, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of waste legislation and relevant offences and have a full understanding of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act.
  • You will be able to determine your own priorities, plan, monitor and evaluate envirocrime work, take necessary corrective action or identify issues that need to be escalated and be able to meet environmental health service standards, targets and deadlines.
  • To be successful in the role you must have effective interviewing skills in formal and challenging situations, have good written and verbal communication skills and be able to engage effectively with a range of audiences.
