Our role sits within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Office (CDIO) Group that deliver in-house solutions for a broad range of technical and operational issues. The CDIO Customer Engagement and IT Business Services Group supports HMRC Customer Services Group incorporating Personal Tax, Debt Management, Business Tax and Customs, and Benefits and Credits. The team has a focus to Transform Customer Management, helping our customers to be able to interact with us in the right way, at the right time and for the right reasons.

Job description

This is an exciting time to grow join a growing team as a Cloud Infrastructure Manager. You will be given the opportunity to take the lead on production and management processes for cloud governance and support in a team that is expanding to meet ever growing demand. You will work closely with 3rd party suppliers, technical delivery groups within HMRC CDIO and HMRC Customer groups to achieve excellent results.

This role will suit an individual who has experience in working with cloud technologies – who takes a rational and organised approach to tasks, and support cloud solutions with inherent quality. Although you will be a specialist in a given technology area you should expect to build a breadth of skills and knowledge as part of your personal development in order to match evolution path of the organisation and the wider industry.

This role is within a live service function responsible for the management of all aspects of major application and its underlying cloud infrastructure. You will work with Application Engineers, Senior Developers and Service Managers to achieve end to end Service Management. You will be primarily focussed on Azure platform maintenance and improvement, although experience of other cloud technologies, including AWS, is helpful.

Person specification

A successful candidate will:

  • Have experience supporting and managing Cloud environments, particularly Microsoft Azure and AWS.
  • Be able to translate complex technical ideas into business impacts and facilitate the relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Be able to make decisions characterised by managed levels of risk and complexity and recommend decisions as risk and complexity increase.
  • Be capable of resolving technical disputes between wider peers and all stakeholders, considering all views and opinions.
  • Have experience working with measurements and metrics.

Responsibilities

As a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, you will:

  • Be part of a small team accountable for maintaining a significant live service.
  • Lead all services within a cloud Subscription.
  • Provide trustworthy, specialist advice on the operating system.
  • Handle security and concurrency within the operating system.
  • Coordinate and direct the operating system build and configuration, maintenance, upgrade, and patching.
  • Be responsible for production and management of processes for correct cloud governance including security and vulnerability processes, as well as financial management and cloud cost optimisation.
  • Ensure service requirements and demand are produced, planned, and supported.
  • Manage all licence and certificate requirements, working with the service owner to ensure funding is planned and updates are applied appropriately.
  • Deploy Azure VMs (Windows Server and Linux) in a highly available environment.
  • Explore automation technology options within Azure.

Essential Criteria

You will need to demonstrate practical, technical knowledge and experience in the following:

  • Cloud Infrastructure Management, Cloud technologies and security concepts, managing virtual machines and maintaining operating systems.
  • The ability to work with well understood cloud technologies, particularly Microsoft Azure and AWS.
  • Building and maintaining cloud solutions using best practices.
  • Monitoring cloud solutions for performance and availability, and troubleshooting issues. Updating cloud solutions as new features become available.

Technical skills

We’ll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • During the interview you will be questions to assess your Technical Skills. The panel will ask you questions regarding effective management of cloud technologies in order to assess your technical skills and expertise.
