About StepChange
StepChange provides the UK’s most comprehensive free debt advice service. Since 1993, we’ve helped 7.5 million people with debt problems take back control of their finances and their lives.

Our colleagues help thousands of people every week and right now, we’re looking for even more passionate and dedicated people to join our team.

We have grown dramatically over the last 30+ years as the demand for debt advice has soared, and this demand is set to grow even more as millions feel the impact of the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Our clients really appreciate the work we do to support them. As a result of their reviews and ratings, we won a Feefo 10 Years of Excellence award in 2024, and a Platinum Trusted Service Award for the third time.

What is debt advice?
Getting debt advice involves us taking an impartial, expert look at a client’s finances, and recommending ways to get them back on track. We do this online or over the phone.

It usually includes setting up a monthly budget, suggesting ways to reduce their spending or increasing the money they have coming in, an explanation of what could happen if they don’t pay your debts, and guidance on which of their debts need to be paid first.

We will then recommend ways to deal with their debts, which could include a range of debt solutions, such as a Debt Management Plan for example, with information on how they work and how they affect the client.

How we work
We have a wide range of teams working together across different locations to deliver our strategic objectives and support people in debt, with offices in Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff, Chester and London.

Our contact centre roles make up a large proportion of our colleagues. People in these roles deal directly with our clients daily. Our support roles play a vital part in the smooth running of the charity, working behind the scenes, from supporting our client teams to managing our systems.

For clients who own their homes, we also provide mortgage and equity release advice. We’re the UK’s only charity-operated equity release and mortgage service and can help clients with interest only lifetime mortgages, lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans.

And as a charity, we have a very active external affairs team in London and Glasgow, influencing change and using our clients’ experiences to make the evidence-based case for changing regulation, law and practice, to prevent and reduce the harm that problem debt causes.

Working for us
We offer hybrid working for most of our roles and have shifted our contact centres to a hybrid operation to enable our colleagues to offer support, advice and guidance to clients from home.

StepChange is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion, creating an environment where every individual, regardless of characteristics, can be authentic and achieve their full potential.

We also place a huge emphasis on supporting, developing and rewarding you throughout your career with us, and we are the first debt advice charity to have our leadership programme recognised by the Institute of Leadership.

And we want you to be happy at work so that you can give the best possible service to our clients. We have a wide range of benefits, including financial, emotional and physical support.

As well as being a living wage employer, and offering a competitive starting salary we also offer a personal pension plan, season ticket loan and cycle to work scheme, as well as a range of benefits to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as a generous holiday allowance, a holiday purchase scheme, a healthcare cash plan, and wellbeing and alternative therapies.

What to expect from interviews
Because of the broad variety of roles we offer, we have two slightly different recruitment processes depending on the type of role you’re applying for. You can find out more about what to expect in the careers section of our website.

We want to make our process as accessible as possible. If you would like us to make reasonable adjustments to support you in your application, please email the Recruitment Team at recruitment@stepchange.org.

If you’d like to help us transform the lives of those struggling with debt, we’d love to hear from you.
