A great place to work
We offer access to excellent skills and training opportunities. You will be encouraged to contribute to our innovative culture, taking full advantage of our tailored professional and personal development initiatives. Our competitive benefits package further enhances a positive working environment.
Everyone has the opportunity to be proactive in their own development by taking advantage of our extensive internal and external training courses, with dynamic coaching, mentoring and seminars.
Sustainability is hardwired into our business agenda and underpins our approach to people, ensuring we have happy, healthy and motivated staff who are able to contribute to the communities in which we operate.
Graduate schemes and apprenticeships
Our ‘Year in Industry’ programme provides an opportunity for engineering undergraduates to experience life first-hand at Porterbrook, where they can contribute to specific projects during their time with the business. Students are assessed whilst with us and there is scope to secure full-time employment after graduation. This has allowed us to support young engineers and encourage them into rail engineering.
Our engineering apprentices progress to degree level before joining our graduate training scheme. This has allowed us to introduce new talent into the industry and provides an opportunity to work alongside and learn from experienced rail engineers.
The company’s engineering graduate training scheme is IMechE accredited for 3-year periods and has produced nearly 20 Chartered Engineers since its inception.
In addition, we recruit apprentices across all areas of the business, including our Finance and Planning departments.
Diversity and Inclusion
Porterbrook is a fully diverse and inclusive employer. The company is registered as a Disability Confident employer and holds Living Wage Accreditation. Our diversity policy is reviewed regularly in order to ensure fair and equal treatment for all existing and potential staff.
Women are well represented across every level of the organisational structure. Many of our female colleagues are role models within the rail industry.
We are immensely proud that women make up 26% of Porterbrook’s employees, working in a variety of important roles across the company including our leadership team. This compares to an industry average of 18.9% (NSAR 2025) and we are committed to increasing this further by:
- Supporting remote working to offer further flexibility for all staff, recognising those with caring responsibilities,
- Aspring to have a diverse and inclusive workplace and strongly encourage suitably qualified applicants, from a wide range of backgrounds, to apply and join us on our journey,
- Engaging with cross industry initiatives to attract more diversity into the rail industry particularly among women, young people and under-represented communities.
