Voluntary Subwarden – Hazlerigg Rutland & John Phillips Halls
A vacancy has arisen for 1 Subwarden to join the existing team within Hazlerigg Rutland and John Phillips Halls of Residence. Applications are invited from post graduate research students of the University. The post will start in November 2025.
Accommodation and Catering Arrangements
Free accommodation is available throughout the year. The accommodation available for Subwardens is only suitable for a single person. Hazlerigg-Rutland and John Phillips Halls are self-catered; however some meals are provided during term time.
Duties
Subwardens assist the Warden in the day-to-day running of the hall. Duties include pastoral, disciplinary and administrative tasks as well as being involved in social aspects of hall life. The successful applicant will form part of a team of 4 Subwardens, providing out-of-hours emergency cover for 2 halls totaling 496 students. Subwardens are encouraged to be involved in hall life, which helps to ensure the smooth running of both halls.
Personal Attributes
Candidates must display a high level of personal organisational ability, good administrative ability, leadership qualities, be sociable, and a good team player. Subwardens are expected to demonstrate a commitment to the community spirit of the Hall and a willingness to engage with students and hall life in general.
It is very important to find out what you are committing yourself to and to understand what is involved. All applicants are required to find out more about the hall community as it forms an integral part of the selection process. The successful applicant must be available to attend Subwarden training sessions and undertake first aid, mental health first aid and fire safety training when the courses are available.

Application Procedures
It is highly recommended that prospective candidates contact the Warden and current Subwardens to find out about Hall life and the likely duties. As part of the process, interested applicants are invited to come and meet the team on the 14th October. This is a chance to look around the halls and ask questions about the post prior to close of applications. Please email for details.
Applicants should not submit a standard University application form. Please submit The Office of Voluntary Subwardenship application form together with an accompanying letter outlining suitability for the post. These are then to be sent directly to the Warden. Candidates must provide contact details for two written references (PhD Supervisors, Director of Studies / Line Manager, Head of Section). Completed application forms are to be submitted to the Warden by email by 6pm Friday 24th October 2025 (Rigg-rut_jp_warden@lboro.ac.uk), with a view to holding interviews week commencing Monday 27th October. Successful candidates should be ready to take their place in hall by mid-November 2025.
