Due to increased demand & successful project wins, we have an exciting new opportunity for a Principal Highways Drainage Engineer to play a key part in a growing team of 130+ C&S Engineers and Designers.

Our department covers a range of projects from assurance, Concept Studies through to Detailed Design, plus support during ECI and construction stages, providing a wide variety of interesting work. Industries can range across Roads, Water, Transportation, Energy, Nuclear and Defence.

This position will be part of the Highways & Transportation team that supports all the afore mentioned industries, with main focus on drainage engineering including flood risk assessments.

Role Location: Manchester or London Office (Predominately home based and will consider a nationwide location but must be flexible and willing to travel as per business needs)

We will also consider Senior Engineer’s working towards the principal level with proven experience and capability.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Working in a multi-disciplinary team delivering infrastructure projects, you will be responsible for the delivery of civil and structural (highways) advice, analysis, calculations, designs, reports and specifications. Taking responsibility for leading varying size projects and sub tasks from a technical perspective. Communicate designs effectively to the supporting teams, other disciplines, construction personnel, stakeholders and clients. Attendance occasionally required for site visits, design reviews and client meetings, can be nationwide. Support and mentor junior team members. Challenge and deliver value engineering solutions. Confident and authoritative in front of clients.

As a client facing Principal Engineer, your prime responsibilities could involve:

  • Develop early solutions for drainage solutions, improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling of relevant documents, value engineering, consideration of new and innovative techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
  • Organising discipline staff, assisting allocating work and ensuring delivery against planned timescales inc communicating effectively with other disciplines to ensure that interfaces are clearly defined and correctly designed
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of Health and Safety including CDM responsibilities.
  • Mentoring and developing graduates and less experienced engineers
  • Ensure that work is carried out with relevant codes, standards and procedures, and maintain and develop awareness of current relevant codes and standards
  • Implement company, and where applicable client/ project policies and procedures
  • Productions and development of highway specifications
  • Optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
  • More specific tasks could include:
  • Defining client requirements, specifying relevant surveys
  • Develop technical briefs provided to external design services contractor for improvement and renewals work.
  • Deliver drainage and SuDS design across multiple infrastructure projects
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders including authorities and utility providers
  • Support adoptable sewer applications and technical approval processes
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK design standards, and BIM requirements
  • Work within multidisciplinary design teams to integrate drainage solutions
  • Identify and resolve technical issues throughout project delivery
  • Maintain high standards of technical quality and design assurance
  • Design of new drainage designs and flood risk assessments, and desirable requirement to undertake hydraulic modelling
  • Supporting the PM in identifying change, progress reporting, tracking of issues, risks and resolutions

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • Significant minimum experience in UK highways & infrastructure at all stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Proficiency with drainage modelling software (inc Infodrainage), and ACAD
  • Excellent knowledge of UK design working practices and installation requirements of the discipline across a range of industries.
  • Extensive knowledge of UK legislation and standards
  • Awareness of risk identification, quantification, management and of HSE requirements
  • Client facing liaison and interaction
  • Eligibility for UK Security Clearance

Desirable

  • Hydraulic Modelling
  • Experience with new and historic highways, optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
  • Experience in leading small teams and supporting more junior engineers.
  • Project Management experience
  • Requirements Management experience
  • Temporary Works / Geotechnical
  • Infraworks, or Digital capability in 4D sequencing

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum BEng Civil or substantial experience to compensate.
  • Membership of Professional Industry Body
  • CSCS card

Desirable

  • Chartership with ICE, CIHT or similar
  • Further industry recognised training and qualifications
  • Project Management qualifications
  • CDM qualifications
  • Active Security Clearance
  • National Highways Passport
