About the role

As a member of our team, you’ll be responsible for welcoming and assisting visitors at Northampton Museum sites, ensuring their safety and security while they enjoy our services. This role entails working 20 hours per week on an annualized hours contract, covering both regular opening hours and special events outside of standard operating times, including weekends and evenings.

What will you be doing?

  • Dealing with enquiries from visitors and other users, supplying information, provide assistance to exhibitions, events and education sessions held within museum premises.
  • Ensuring the security of museum collections at sites during opening hours including emergency evacuations.
  • To be responsible for public safety within buildings during opening hours and at other times as required.
  • To assist with porterage of goods and equipment when required.
  • To provide reception desk cover as required, including the sales of publications, tickets and souvenirs.
  • To undertake cleaning of buildings, both public and non public areas as required.
  • To provide and serve refreshments for meetings and special parties.
  • Check and carry out basic maintenance to plant and other equipment as necessary.
  • To set up/take down exhibitions.
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the position as designated by the line manager.
  • To ensure reasonable care is taken at all times for the health, safety and welfare of you and other persons and to comply with the policies and procedures relating to health and safety within West Northants Council.

About you

We’re seeking an energetic, resourceful, and dedicated individual to join our Visitor Services team at the museum service.

Essential qualities include excellent communication skills, a friendly and approachable demeanour, and previous experience in customer-facing roles.

Applicants should be available for weekend shifts, Bank holidays, and evening work, demonstrating flexibility to meet the demands of the service.

Additionally, the role may involve acting as a Keyholder when necessary.
