Mainteneance Engineer – Middlesborough

Enva Wood is part of Enva, a UK and Ireland company that handles waste, recycling and resource recovery. We recycle non-hazardous waste wood. We collect wood waste, sort it by grade, process it and turn it into various products including animal bedding and fuel (biomass for energy generation. 

We are looking for a hands-on Maintenance Engineer to join our dynamic team in Middlesbrough. This position combines strong welding/fabrication skills with mechanical engineering expertise. The role is weighted toward welding and metal work (60%) while also requiring mechanical maintenance and problem-solving capabilities (40%).

You will be responsible for maintaining and improving a wide variety of plant machinery used in recycling operations, with a focus on reactive and planned preventive maintenance that fulfils the needs of the department and the business.
  • This is a 4 on 4 off shift pattern rotation days only. 6am – 6pm with an hour unpaid break 
  • Days, (Nights may be required for business cover) 
  • The workplace is typically a combination of open-air and covered areas, often exposed to the elements. High volumes of mixed wood waste—including pallets, construction debris, and engineered wood—are processed, creating significant amounts of wood dust.
 This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who thrives in a hands-on, proactive, production-driven environment. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance to ensure machinery operates at optimal performance levels. 
  • Overhaul, adapt, and carry out improvements on existing machinery. Which consists of mobile equipment, Shredders & fixed equipment. 
  • Welding and mechanically biased role with some electrical work involved. 
  • Replace bearings, inspect compressors, and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems. 
  • Maintain and repair equipment including conveyors, pipework, hydraulics, pneumatics, and welding tasks. 
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities within the plant and suggest new methods and procedures. 
  • Welding & Fabrication (60%)
  • Perform high-quality MIG and arc welding to repair and fabricate machinery, plant structures, and equipment components.
  • Fabricate and assemble custom parts, guards, fixtures, and structural supports in line with operational requirements.
  • Operate cutting, bending, and shaping equipment, including oxy-fuel and plasma tools.
  • Maintain welding equipment and manage consumables to support continuous plant operations.
  • Mechanical Engineering & Maintenance (40%)
  • Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and corrective repairs on shredders, grinders, conveyors, hydraulic systems, and other plant machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Support equipment installation, commissioning, and modification projects.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing reliability, efficiency, and safety.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records in line with company and regulatory standards.
  • Worked on Mobile Plant Engines but not essential
  • Fault finding and problem-solving concerning; pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and PLC equipment 
  • Complete all documentation to a high standard. 
  • Carry out basic facility and site service maintenance as needed. 
  • Ensure effective teamwork and adopt a flexible, first-time-right approach. 
  • Maintain high standard of work and Housekeeping 

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Recognized welding certification (e.g., AWS, CWB, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  •  Mechanical or industrial engineering qualification
  • Some Electrical knowledge an advantage but not essential
