Job Description
Design Managers are project based, working as part of the project team to deliver the design and engineering aspects of our projects. This may include delivering design management on major bids.
As a Design Manager, you are accountable for all the design for a scheme (on a framework) or section of a major project. Managing the relevant designers on your project, ensuring the design being delivered on time, to budget and technically compliant. All our designs must be safe, sustainable, and efficient to construct.
As Design Manager you will work with in a team of design managers, either on a major project or delivering schemes as part of a framework. You will report to a Principal or Senior Design Manager as part of a wider team.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Be a key member of a major project’s design team (or lead small design teams on framework schemes), collaborative with the client, consultants, construction staff and supply chain. Be the design package manager for your scheme.
- Be familiar with our design and engineering needs so that they are understood and well-defined including the scope split between design stages and designer organisations. Work to the Design Management Plan and other control documentation. Support the PDM/SDM in producing these as required.
- Manage the detailed integrated design (& procurement) programme which is robustly monitored to ensure design delivery. Collate and report on design progress and technical risks regularly.
- Set out clear deliverables, and measurable outcomes for the design stages in the lifecycle and be able to determine when designs are complete. Review deliverables for acceptance when required
- Check that the designs we receive from our designers are quality controlled, technically assured and are of sufficient detail for the design stage and purpose.
- Control design change and escalate this contemporaneously. Contribute and review commercial correspondence related to design.
- Ensure the designs are constructable, follow safe-by-design principles and achieve our sustainability goals, including reporting or carbon metrics etc as required
- Provide judgment and advice on design solutions, to meet the requirements of the project and achieve our commercial aims. Engage regularly with the project procurement and construction teams during the design development and options selection.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
- Engineering or management experience in infrastructure or related industry with demonstrable track record of achievement
- Demonstrable knowledge of at least one design and construction process models (e.g. plan of work)
- Practical approach, logical thought process and a methodical way of working
- A creative and innovative approach to problem-solving
- Experience of technical management being able to understand and review design deliverables and able to demonstrate the ability to collate information and prepare reports
- Strong analytical skills
- Visible leader with clear communication, presenting and influencing skills
Desirable
- Experience of managing large amounts of design change
- Understand of operating Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) and design workflows
- Demonstrable basic legal, contractual and construction knowledge
- Confidence and ability to assert influence
- Some experience of drafting effective contractual correspondence and the facilitation of collaborative solutions
- Basic negotiating and team-working skills

Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree / Engineering or management apprenticeship with industry experience
Desirable
- Chartered member of professional institute (MICE/IMechE/MCIOB etc)
- Related Project Managment or Risk Managment training
