About the job
Data Protection Manager / Associate Legal Counsel – Data Protection
Salary: £70,000 – £85,000 depending on experience
Location: Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, 2 days on site
Reporting to our Company Secretary, based in our head office, we are seeking a full time Data Protection Manager or Associate Legal Counsel – Data Protection to:

Act as the Group subject-matter expert on privacy and provide strategic direction for privacy related projects.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of global privacy laws and regulations (with a particular focus on the UK, EU, USA, and China) and related fields such as AI and cyber security.

Analyse proposed legislation, guidance, and best practice to develop and mature all aspects of the Group privacy compliance programme.

Provide advice to stakeholders of all levels across the Group on a wide range of complex issues (including direct marketing, telemetry, cookies, and processing special categories of data).

Review security alerts in conjunction with the IT & Security team.

Manage responses to data incidents, maintain the data incident register, and manage notifications to supervisory authorities as applicable.

Draft and negotiate data processing agreements and data sharing agreements.

Manage and deliver responses to requests to exercise data subject rights.

Conduct data protection impact assessments.

Maintain privacy policies, guidelines, procedures, and notices.

Conduct privacy and security due diligence on prospective and existing vendors.

Provide guidance on personal data exports and conduct transfer impact assessments.

Maintain accurate and appropriate data processing records.

Partner with stakeholders to ensure that privacy issues are considered by design, including support for the engineering teams to maintain a secure software development lifecycle and assessing product compliance prior to release.

Prepare and deliver awareness communications and training packages across the Group (including generic e-learning and bespoke face-to-face sessions).

Conduct global privacy compliance audits, make recommendations for process improvements, establish robust remedial plans, and monitor completion of actions.

Work closely with the Commercial Legal team to draft or advise on privacy-related contract provisions.

Liaise with the external Data Protection Officer and seek advice from external legal advisors as applicable.

Prepare reports for the Board, committees, and senior management.

Manage the internal and external facing privacy mailboxes.
Key requirements

5+ years of relevant privacy experience

Passion for privacy, security, and technology

Strong attention to detail

Highly motivated self-starter with a “can do” attitude

Ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to operate at all levels

Ability to convert research into practical, risk-based advice in a commercial environment

Highly competent IT skills
