Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service ban

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service

A career with Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is a diverse one. We recruit full time Firefighters to the Wholetime Duty System; part time Firefighters to the On-Call Duty System; Fire Officers to the Flexible Duty System, Fire Control Operators and Support Staff to ensure Bedfordshire is always supported by our teams.

Wholetime Firefighters

BFRS is one of the very few services that works on a 24hr-on, 72hr-off shift rotation. Our Wholetime Firefighters are highly trained in responding to fires, water rescues, road traffic collisions and a variety of other incidents. All new recruits follow a comprehensive 14-week training programme which fully equips them with the specialist skills required for this role.

The role of a modern-day Firefighter is very broad based. It’s more than putting out fires and rescuing cats stuck up a tree! Our Firefighters protect the community, inspire young minds, educate people to keep them safe and excel by being a role model for future generations.

An increasing part of the Firefighters role is to encourage a safer community by preventing fires and emergencies before they happen and to make sure people understand the risks of fire and what they can do to protect themselves.

Firefighters take part in activities such as:

  • Giving talks to schools;
  • Visiting community groups;
  • Fitting smoke detectors in homes;
  • Advising homeowners on protecting their properties from fire risks;
  • Working with youth and vulnerable people.

Firefighters therefore use a range of communication skills and have regular contact with all sections of the community.

On-Call Firefighters

We are recruiting from within the community to become on-call firefighters. Support your community and become On-Call Firefighters at #TeamBedsFire to help respond effectively to emergencies and save lives.

On-Call Firefighters are a vital part of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. They provide flexible, efficient and reliable fire and rescue cover and engagement in their local community.

Support Staff

You don’t have to be a Firefighter to work for the Fire Service. Support Staff roles are varied and play a key part in supporting the Service to ensure the safety of our community.  Community safety, strategic support and technical services are a few key elements to becoming a part of the team.

Having the right skills and knowledge are essential to doing things right the first time as safely as possible. Our Training and Development team ensure Firefighters and other staff are completely competent and confident in their role. This could be training Firefighters in our smoke house, putting effective training packages together to update them on new risks or developing our managers of the future.

Transfer

There are regular opportunities to transfer to Bedfordshire, or to apply via a promotional gateway for a management opportunity. Join an inclusive organisation that supports and develops our teams to allow them to provide outstanding service. If you are an operational firefighter or middle manager looking for a leadership opportunity in a fire and rescue service with a great reputation and a strong track record of visible leadership and delivering positive outcomes for our communities then Bedfordshire could be for you.
