About the role
Are you a distinguished academic in Health Economics and Evaluation? Imperial College London is inviting applications for the post of Professor in Health Economics and Evaluation for a joint appointment between the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit (ICTU) in the School of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine and the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Innovation (CHEPI) in the Department of Economics and Public Policy within the Business School.
This new position represents a strategic milestone for Imperial, as the first joint professorial appointment between the Faculty of Medicine and Imperial Business School. It supports the vision of the School of Convergence Science in Health and Technology, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to address global challenges through innovative research, education, and policy impact.
The Schools of Convergence Science at Imperial brings together expertise from multiple disciplines to accelerate scientific discovery and real-world application. The Health and Technology school, in particular, focuses on leveraging data science, AI, engineering, and economics to advance medical research and healthcare delivery. You will play a critical role in supporting this mission by establishing a Health Economic Evaluation Collaboration Network that will provide a framework for coordinating, supporting, and strengthening health economic evaluation activities across Imperial.
In this role, you will bridge two faculties with complementary strengths. The Faculty of Medicine has a well-established reputation in clinical trials, epidemiology, and public health, while the Business School is internationally recognized for its expertise in health economics, policy evaluation, and business analytics. Strengthening ties between these faculties responds to increasing demands from research funders, helping to build internal capacity in health care economic evaluation, and to facilitate broader interdisciplinary collaboration across Imperial.
What you would be doing
You will be responsible for establishing and leading a new programme of research in economic evaluation, with a particular emphasis on its application within clinical trials and other types of applied health studies. This will include developing new research sections within ICTU and CHEPI, fostering research collaborations with academics across public health, medicine, life sciences, and the business school, building and expanding a dedicated health economic evaluation team. By doing so, you will enhance Imperial’s reputation and capacity in economic evaluation, responding to growing national and international demand for expertise in this area, particularly in the evaluation of healthcare interventions, technologies, and policies.
We would expect you to provide evidence of a research agenda in areas of economic research connected to their expertise in health care economic evaluation. Examples of relevant areas include, but are not limited to:
- Welfare economics and the evaluation of public programmes from a social welfare perspective, including questions such as the value of life, health and wellbeing outcomes, or the distribution of welfare.
- Data science and econometric methods for the analysis of large health care datasets, including high-dimensional and high-frequency data.
- Behavioural economics for the analysis of provider and patient decisions and health care pathways, including treatment preferences, adherence to treatments, innovation adoption and resistance.
In addition to research, the role presents an opportunity to contribute to education in health economics at the Business School. You will help shape Imperial’s teaching in this field, supporting both postgraduate and executive education programmes focused on health economics, policy, and management. Expanding the School’s teaching portfolio in health aligns with Imperial’s broader commitment to developing the next generation of leaders in health economics and policy innovation.
By leading the development of a world-class programme in economic evaluation, you will position Imperial as a leader in health economic evaluation research and training, ensuring that the institution remains at the forefront of global health and policy impact.
What we are looking for
To succeed in this role:
- You must hold a PhD in Health Economics or related field or equivalent.
- An international reputation and expertise in the field of Health Economics and Evaluation
- A sustained track record in attracting high levels of research funding
- Experience of leading an economic evaluation work and generating income streams from this activity
- An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming international standing
- Experience of training undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Experience of supervision of higher degrees (PhD)
