Mid Sussex District Council
Who we are and what we offer
At Mid Sussex District Council, no two days are the same, whatever team you work on. You could be working on large projects such as the Local Government Reorganisation or the 1-2-3 waste collection rollout, which bring together colleagues from many disciplines within the Council, or individual programmes and day-to-day activities like parking services or the green spaces team maintaining our award-winning parks.
Beyond the range of different and exciting positions across the Council, we want employees to feel that they have more than just a job, that we view them as human capital which we will invest in and help to thrive, learning new skills on the job and being given proper support throughout their time with us.
And it’s not just your time with the Council that we care about: we offer a generous annual leave package which grows with your service, and flexible working options mean you can balance work and life in a way that works for you. There are many different forms of flexible working which include:
- Flexitime
- Home and hybrid working
- Job share
- Compressed working week
- Part-time and term-time roles (where feasible)
- Early Careers Network
- Training
The Council invests in the wellbeing of its employees, providing a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 confidential support for personal and work-related challenges, as well as initiatives to promote a healthy workplace culture. With a number of practical perks such as free parking, cycle to work schemes, free EV charging, free parking, and electric bikes for work travel, we start by making your journey to work easier, greener, and healthier.
We go on to offer discounted access to health and fitness clubs while eye test reimbursements and discounted glasses are also provided for employees who use display screen equipment regularly to make sure you can make your time outside of the workplace healthier and less expensive too.
Our Values
Mid Sussex District Council prides itself on our commitment to building a community that is open and welcoming to everyone. Through our work across the Council, we keenly protect the rights of our residents and employees. As the district has grown more diverse in recent years, our role as a council has evolved so that we recognise the characteristics of everyone in Mid Sussex and seek to entrench the rights of all.
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies have built a workplace where everyone feels equally welcomed and valued. This means making the Council a space where no discrimination is ever tolerated, be it direct, indirect or perceived. We recognise the Nine Protected Characteristics as enshrined in the Equality Act 2010.
MSDC places a feeling of belonging at its core, and we will work to make your journey into the Council and throughout your career as inclusive and welcoming as possible. Our policies and range of positions are geared to attract the best talent that we can – talent that we will nurture to the best of our abilities.
MSDC Council Leader Robert Eggleston says: “As an area which has always welcomed new communities, we are proud of our culture of openness. Our people are our greatest resource: through them we innovate and create opportunities for the future.”
What we can do for you
Mid Sussex District Council also values professional growth. We believe in providing the support, time and resources you need to pursue the broad career development tools available to all employees. We have a dedicated learning platform that provides both e-learning and instructor led training facilitated across a broad range of topics and combined with access to The Sussex Learning Consortium and MLB learning, you can advance your existing knowledge or explore new areas of interest in a broad range of subjects.
Most importantly you’ll be joining a workplace that values equality, diversity, and inclusion at every level. We know our strength lies in the different perspectives, backgrounds, and talents of our people and work hard to build a culture of openness, respect, and collaboration. We currently have six Employee Networks that employees can join, each offering a safe and supportive space where colleagues can connect, collaborate, and influence positive change, allowing your voice to be included in shaping the workplace culture of everyone at Mid Sussex Council.
