The Barn Cafe at Grimsbury Farm (in Kingswood, Bristol) offers employment training to people with learning disabilities who want a career in catering or hospitality. Brandon Trust's Support Workers at the cafes support people with a learning disability, autism or both to live life in the way they choose, empowering them to thrive and realise their ambitions.

This inspiring and interesting role combines the opportunity to utilise and develop your catering experience with empowering people with a learning disability to reach their goal of achieving paid employment. In return we offer a full induction, support and training and on-going career development.

We have part time positions available, the cafe's opening hours are 8.30-4.30 and you will work a range of hours across 7 days a week.

You’ll support trainees in carrying out the catering skills required in a cafe setting. You’ll also provide keyworker support; guiding and encouraging the trainees to work safely and independently in the cafe environments, developing skills and helping them to progress by means of practical tasks and also theory tasks by using works skills folders. Everyone has different needs and disabilities affect people in different ways so you’ll adapt your approach to meet the needs of the individuals you support.

Working closely with the other team members you’ll prepare a range of hot and cold cafe food and also buffets as well as make drinks, manage the till and serve customers. You’ll also get involved in stocking items and stock rotation, and checking deliveries all the while ensuring you adhere to food hygiene regulations and policies. There is also a general cleaning element of the role. The cafes can be very busy particularly in the school holidays and the work can be physically demanding at times.

A catering qualification or catering experience in a commercial / business setting is essential, whilst any experience of working in or running a small business would be an advantage. An understanding and knowledge of employment support and employment training for people with learning disabilities will be an advantage and a Social Care diploma Level 2 would also be an advantage.

You love working with people and are able to build relationships based on trust, respect and consideration. You’ll also need to be patient and understanding of people’s varied needs. With good communication skills, you’ll overcome challenges with positivity, commitment and enthusiasm. You will need access to your own transport to travel between the cafes.

We offer an extensive induction and training programme, followed by on-going career development. Our award-winning training is designed to ensure that you feel confident and knowledgeable. We can also support you to gain professional qualifications such as your Health and Social Care Diploma and NVQ qualifications.

The salary for this role is £19,593 – £20,016 pa pro rata (£10.02 – £10.24 per hour), dependent on qualifications & experience.
