National Trust

Our History

We all have a place we love. A place that inspires us. A place with its own unique and particular atmosphere. We were created to help people make the most of these very special places – and the good things that come from them.

Today, we’re Europe’s largest conservation organisation, with huge – and incredibly varied – responsibilities. We protect and welcome everyone to explore and enjoy some 709 miles of coastline, 250,000 hectares of land of outstanding natural beauty, 104 nature reserves, 6 World Heritage Sites. We also look after spectacular houses and gardens and one of the world’s largest and most significant holdings of fine art and heritage objects.

What we stand for

Nature, beauty and history. For everyone, for ever. Together, we protect and care for places, so that people and nature can thrive. Many millions of people share the belief that nature, beauty and history are for everyone. So we look after the nation’s coasts, historic sites, countryside and green spaces, making sure everyone can benefit.

When we say the Trust is for everyone, we mean it. We don’t just protect and care for landscapes and buildings for their own sake. They’re for people, for all people. Our ambition is to break down the barriers that prevent people everywhere from being able to encounter nature, beauty and history, however and wherever they want to.

For you

We need all kinds of people, from all backgrounds and all ages, to come and work for the Trust and help to make a better future – for people and for nature.

Whatever your interest, your skill, your need or your passion, there’s a job for you to get involved in here. Every single person who works for the Trust – be they bakers, builders, rangers, gardeners, fundraisers or buyers – is working towards the same goal. And every role is helping to make a real difference in the world.

LGBTQ+ Network

Our LGBTQ+ Network exists to create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where LGBTQ+ staff, volunteers and allies can connect, develop, and thrive. The network promotes visibility, awareness and acceptance, while helping to shape organisational policies and practices through the lived experiences and insights of its members.

WorkAbility Network

Our WorkAbility Network brings together disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent staff and volunteers to share experiences, learn from one another, and help remove barriers in the workplace. Through peer connections, events, allyship, and organisational engagement, the network amplifies members’ voices and helps drive positive change across the Trust.

Race Equity Network

Our Race Equity Network brings together colleagues and volunteers from the global majority and people of colour to share experiences, champion fairness, and help drive meaningful change across the Trust. Through advocacy, collaboration, and partnership with allies, the network works to challenge racial inequality, amplify underrepresented voices, and create a workplace where everyone can thrive.
